A new California bill requiring community colleges to offer abortions sparked praise and criticism after advancing in the state legislature this month. Supporters believe it will increase students’  access to abortions while opponents say it will increase pressure on students to abort their unborn babies.

The bill would expand a 2023 Democrat state law that mandated abortions on public college and university campuses in California.

Assemblymember Catherine Stefani, a Democrat who authored the bill, noted in a news release that the bill’s goal is to address “gaps in access to reproductive healthcare.”
