How I Got Started As A Writer

Hello everyone,

I decided to do something a little different and share how I got started as a writer. This isn’t going to be your typical “I started writing short stories when I was ten and gradually fell in love with it.” This is more off how I got started branching into my writing career. While I haven’t fully developed one yet, hopefully I will soon.

When I was a sophomore in college I wanted to write for the student-run paper. Unfortunately I didn’t have the time. The last semester of my junior year I decided to give it a shot. I currently have two published articles in there which you can find the link in my bio.

During my senior year I wanted to continue but the original editor wasn’t on campus and nobody else was interested in running it. At the same time I was looking for writing based internships I could possibly do my last semester of college.

I spoke to the academic and career advisor and one of the English profs and was led to University Relations. There I interned as a student profile writer. I’d read student profiles before but didn’t know students could write them. I just completed the internship in May and currently have five articles published. As well as articles, for a media production class I took I wrote, filmed, edited and produced short videos for the multicultural services and centre for intercultural studies.

After graduation I was a volunteer writer for an organization called In Education Inc. that provided educational resources for low-income families. I’m currently wrapping up a public relations and marketing internship with The Borgen Project, an organization dedicated to spreading awareness about global poverty. My tasks included holding fundraising and branding campaigns, media outreach, holding an informational event, and holding a 1-mile campaign where I posted flyers, and discussed the organization’s mission. I do similar things as an ambassador for the ENGin program.

I’m thankful for the opportunities I had and hope for more in the future.
